For the Quito sculptor Luis Viracocha Quishpe, large and small stones are his gold. He searches for them in the jungle, in the mountain range, in the sea and in the rivers.
By all means of transportation, Viracocha has traveled with the unshakable belief that, like a tireless miner, he could dig the stones or find them on the surface of the earth, and with his large and coarse hands, he could grant winding, sensual, magical, earthly and cosmic forms to the stones, bringing to light ther robust sides, fine textures, and subtle brightness.
„In the mountains, in the caves, in the rivers and in the sea, the stones are always with us, they speak to us to reach their essence.“
At the age of 4, Luis Viracocha already grabbed a small hammer and began his adventure with the hard material. From there he did not stop.
At a young age he began his journey through the geography of the country, to feel, sense and recover the stones as hidden treasures on a beach, in a bend of the road, in the sea, another great sculptor chiseling with waves. With time he learned to recognize the texture of the stones as if they were other children.
In recent years, dozens of sculptures have been created, which the artist has exhibited in three rooms of the Ecuadorian cultural house Benjamín Carrión: Miguel de Santiago, Oswaldo Guayasamín and Eduardo Kingman.
„The shapes, like the stones, are endless. The universe itself is made of stone,“ he acknowledges, and knows the material of its forms as if expressing a prayer without time: the andesite (it has silica, is gray or blue); the Amazonian serpentine (obtained in Misahuallí, it is veined, of yellow, brown, ochre, black tones) that when polished it looks like a jewel of light; basalt, granite, the marble of Cerro Azul, Guayas. When you enter into dialogue with your being, you can recognize the meaning of the work, the duality of the soft trace of light and game, the texture and the matter.
„There is the essence, the emptiness that is the whole, perhaps because it is everything and nothing at the same time.“
